Canaan Dogs - Functions

Canaans are intelligent dogs that learn commands quickly. It is important to socialize them early. Canaan dogs should be trained in a well-known environment. They become wary and suspicious very easily. This quality is due to their origin. They were accustomed to living in dangerous environments, which provided for the development of the cautious character.

Canaan Dogs - Obedience

The Canaan dog tends to be easily distracted when in strange places. Therefore, it is recommended to train a dog in your yard or neighborhood. Keep in mind that Canaan dogs do not like repetitive actions and get bored easily. They do need obedience training and do well in it. However, obedience is based on lots of repetitions, which is often a problem for the Canaan dog.

Besides obedience, Canaan dogs can be used in agility. They are also good herding dogs. They like to jump and run and seem to have been born for this canine sport. The breed is very agile and intelligent. Their ability to focus on the task eases the trainer's work.

Canaan Dogs - Herding

Though the Canaan dog has not been raised specifically for herding, it has a natural talent to do so. This trait was often used by Nordic people who knew the breed long before the United States or Europe. Unlike, the Border Collie, one of the best herding breeds, the Canaan dog has a loose eye. It allows the dog to keep the flock under total control; yet, it has a disadvantage. The dog is easily distracted by what is going on around it. Canaans that are going to be used in herding should receive obedience training first.
