Canaan Dogs - Description

The Canaan male dog stands 20 - 24 inches in height and weights 40 - 60 pounds. The female stands 19 - 23 inches and weights 30 - 50 pounds. The height is measured to the withers. The body resembles a wild dog; it is strong, of medium build with a square appearance. The Canaan's chest is deep with squared withers. The head is wedge shaped of medium length and the skull is wide and flat. The ears are set low and should be erect. They are large and slightly rounded at the tips. The Canaan's eyes are a dark brown color and almond shaped. The nose should be black in color and the mouth is very strong and the Canaan has a scissor bite. The legs should be straight, leading to the paws, which are cat like with hard pads. The tail is bushy and set high on the rump, and it should curl over the back. The Canaan's coat is thick and straight. The hair ranges from short to medium length. Coat colors are white, sand, gold, red - white, black, cream or red - brown. Masks are generally black and the same color as the body markings. If masks are not present the body markings are white.
Canaan Dogs - Temperament
The Canaan is a herding and guard dog. They are very intelligent and independent dogs. The Canaan needs to be trained and socialized from an early age. The Canaan is agile and lively. They are protective, alert and territorial. The Canaan is leery of strangers, but will not generally attack them, they will often stand and bark, and this breed does bark a lot. They are a one person or family dog. When raised with children, they are very protective. The Canaan can be aggressive towards other dogs of the same sex; this applies to both the male and female. When socialized and trained, this dog is a very docile and a devoted family pet. The Canaan does not mature until about the age of 4 years.
Canaan Dogs - Living Conditions
The Canaan can live in any climate. They can live in an apartment with exercise several times a day. The Canaan would do well with a yard in which to run. They can live indoors or outdoors. Their coat is equipped to keep them warm or cool.
Canaan Dogs - Care and Grooming
The Canaan is a heavy shedder; they have no odor and needs no trimming. Grooming once a week is sufficient.
