Though fossil remains of similar looking dogs date back to about 10,000 years ago, the breed was officially recognized only in the middle of the 20th century. Originally, Canaan Dogs were used for herding the cattle and guarding the property. The strongest dogs were even used as war dogs. Many dogs of this type were feral. The breed was founded in the 1930s when Dr. Menzel captured the best feral dogs of the desert and used them as a foundation stock for the new breed. Nowadays, there are no longer feral Canaan Dogs. The Canaan Dog was first registered by the Israel Kennel Club (IKC) in 1953. 9 years later, it was recognized by the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI.) Nowadays, this breed is recognized by all major breed clubs and associations: AKC, NKC, CKC, ANKC, CDCA, KC, CDC, ACR, ICDCA, and APRI. Any Canaan Dog for sale should be registered by one or several registries. In the USA, most Canaan Dogs are registered by the AKC. The breed standard for the Canaan Dog is not very strict. Purebred dogs may vary in size from 19 to 24 inches (28-61 cm) at the withers, and from 35 to 55 pounds (16-25 kg) in weight. Almost all coat colors are accepted in this breed except pure white, gray, and brindle, though the FCI accepts solid white dogs.

Canaan Dogs are characterized as obedient and easy to train. They are good at agility, obedience, and herding trials. Canaan Dogs make good guards, watchdogs, guides for the blind, therapy animals, and family companions. This breed doesn’t have any specific keeping requirements. Since the breed is very healthy, nearly any Canaan Dog for sale is free from hereditary disorders.
